Probablemente, muchos j\u00f3venes no la recuerden. sin embargo, Blockbuster fue una franquicia donde las personas iban y pod\u00edan llevarse contenido de cine, televisi\u00f3n o videojuegos a su casa, bajo la modalidad de alquiler por tiempo determinado. <\/span>Su popular color azul, para muchos ni\u00f1os era motivo de alegr\u00edas, ya que pod\u00edan alquilar, con total libertad, el juego de video, la serie animada o la pel\u00edcula de su preferencia. <\/span><\/p>\n

Los estrenos, generalmente, tardaban un poco en llegar. Primero, deb\u00edan pasar por la cartelera de cine y luego llegar a las estanter\u00edas de Blockbuster. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hay que recordar que se pod\u00edan alquilar pel\u00edculas de formato Betamax, luego VHS, y por \u00faltimo estaban los DVDs. En cuanto a los videojuegos, se pod\u00edan alquilar juegos del llamado Nintendo Entertaimen System (NES), el S\u00faper Nintendo, el Sega, hasta llegar al Nintendo 64. <\/span><\/p>\n

No obstante, en muchos pa\u00edses fue la pirater\u00eda de juegos y pel\u00edculas la que hizo quebrar a Blockbuster. Tambi\u00e9n la tecnolog\u00eda tuvo mucho que ver. Con las nuevas tecnolog\u00edas de comunicaci\u00f3n e informaci\u00f3n, aunado a la inmediatez que gener\u00f3 el internet, muchas personas pod\u00edan ver las pel\u00edculas en formato digital. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sin embargo, no demos m\u00e1s pre\u00e1mbulos y ahondemos en la historia de Blockbuster.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>UN FRACASO, MOTIVO REAL DE LA CREACI\u00d3N DE BLOCKBUSTER<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En octubre del a\u00f1o 1985, fue fundada Blockbuster Video por David Cook y, aunque este representar\u00eda un \u00e9xito con el tiempo, para sus inicios fue un salvavidas despu\u00e9s de que Cook fracasara con la empresa de software que manejaba.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As\u00ed es. En 1978, David Cook fund\u00f3 Cook Data Services, lo que ser\u00eda una empresa dedicada a la fabricaci\u00f3n de software para empresas de petr\u00f3leo y gas. Los precios de estos, iban hasta 120.000 d\u00f3lares. Los primeros cinco a\u00f1os, sus ventas aumentaron cada a\u00f1o, esto hizo que en febrero de 1983, Cook hiciera p\u00fablica la empresa, logrando recaudar 8,4 millones de d\u00f3lares en la oferta p\u00fablica inicial (OPI, esto se refiere a cuando una empresa permite que el p\u00fablico compre sus acciones).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sin embargo, solo seis meses despu\u00e9s, el valor del negocio cay\u00f3. Esto, debido a que un excedente de petr\u00f3leo hizo que los precios cayeran y como consecuencia las compa\u00f1\u00edas petroleras comenzaron a buscar formas de reducir sus gastos, lo que signific\u00f3 que disminuyeran las ventas de software sofisticado.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despu\u00e9s de hacer una buena evaluaci\u00f3n, Cook tom\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n de que en lugar de invertir los $ 8.4 millones en la empresa ahora en dificultades, los destinar\u00eda a un nuevo negocio, pues estaba buscando \u00abun mercado fragmentado sin jugadores dominantes, un negocio que pudiera establecerse a nivel local y donde pudi\u00e9ramos levantar algunas barreras competitivas\u00bb, as\u00ed que lo encontr\u00f3 en alquileres de videos.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EL NACIMIENTO DE BLOCKBUSTER.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">David Cook y sus asociados se dieron cuenta de que para 1985, m\u00e1s hogares estadounidenses ten\u00edan reproductores de VHS que nunca. Seg\u00fan Inc., desde el a\u00f1o 1983 hasta el a\u00f1o 1985, la industria de alquiler de videos creci\u00f3 de $1 mil millones a $3,7 mil millones. Y a\u00fan mejor, no hab\u00eda ning\u00fan jugador dominante.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Para poder distinguirse de la competencia, Cook ten\u00eda planes de invertir hasta $700.000para adaptarse a la demanda con tiendas grandes, un cat\u00e1logo mucho m\u00e1s amplio, alquileres m\u00e1s largos para que el cliente pudiera llevarse varias cintas, y un mayor control de\u00a0inventario\u00a0a trav\u00e9s de su propio sistema automatizado, con el que detectaba las preferencias de los consumidores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Esto comenzar\u00eda en ciudades densamente pobladas con la mayor cantidad de clientes potenciales. Cook, pas\u00f3 a construir un centro de distribuci\u00f3n de $6 millones abastecido con cintas, que se rastrearon electr\u00f3nicamente mediante un sistema de escaneo de c\u00f3digos de barras, para que las nuevas tiendas pudieran aparecer r\u00e1pidamente sin preocuparse por rastrear cintas para alquilar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Blockbuster abri\u00f3 sus puertas el 19 de octubre de 1985 en Dallas, Estados Unidos, y las cerr\u00f3 de inmediato, pero esto no ser\u00eda por falta de clientes, pues Cook le dijo a CNN en el 2013: \u00abLa primera noche est\u00e1bamos tan abarrotados que tuvimos que cerrar las puertas para evitar que entrara m\u00e1s gente\u00bb.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WAYNE HUIZENGA Y BLOCKBUSTER.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wayne Huizenga, quien era un millonario que en 1983 convirti\u00f3 su empresa Waste Management, en la empresa de eliminaci\u00f3n de desechos m\u00e1s grande de Estados Unidos, seg\u00fan USA Today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Huizenga realmente no le apasionaba la eliminaci\u00f3n de basura y ya hab\u00eda convertido eso en un negocio que val\u00eda miles de millones. Abandon\u00f3 la universidad y comenz\u00f3 la empresa de eliminaci\u00f3n de desechos en 1962 con un cami\u00f3n de basura y un pr\u00e9stamo de $ 5,000 de su padre, seg\u00fan Forbes. Compr\u00f3 sistem\u00e1ticamente peque\u00f1as empresas de ingenier\u00eda sanitaria, amasando un imperio que lleg\u00f3 a dominar la industria. La empresa estaba valorada en $ 3 mil millones en 1984, el a\u00f1o en que Huizenga renunci\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pocos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, en 1987, John Melk, el ejecutivo de Waste Management, yScott Beck, franquiciado de Chicago Blockbuster, persuadieron a Huizenga para que se unieran e invertir en Blockbuster.
